Our history

With over 75 years of market experience, Schiedel stands for durable, well-engineered complete systems, intelligent installation solutions and customer-oriented service. Our products - chimneys, fireplaces and domestic ventilation systems - give our customers safety, comfort and independence and enable energy-efficient heating and ventilation.

In 2021, we celebrated our 75th anniversary. A long time in which Schiedel has produced many important innovations and developments. Today, we look back with pride on what we have achieved and always have the incentive to achieve even more and to light the fire with our partners, customers and employees in the future.

New stainless steel plant

To meet the inquiries and requirements of our customers, a stainless steel plant is being built in Opole, Poland. Planning for this has begun.

75 years of Schiedel

In 2021, the Schiedel brand will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Schielde - chimneys, stoves and ventilation solutions developed for your life.

New design

The corporate design including the logo was updated. In the process, the lettering "Schiedel" with the wave became a square that encloses the lettering. Created by Standard Industries.Launch of the digital room planner Kingfire Inspirator.

Part of the BMI Group

Schiedel becomes part of the BMI Group (Braas Monier Icopal). The company is the largest manufacturer of flat and pitched roofs and waterproofing solutions throughout Europe. It also introduced the first room-air-independent three-sided fireplace insert, KINGFIRE GRANDE S, as well as the ABSOLUT design prefabricated base and the Thermo separating brick.

Acquisition of Ontop Metaloterm

The stainless steel chimney company Ontop Metaloterm has been acquired. It has branches in the Netherlands, Germany, England and Poland.

BMI goes public

The Braas Monier Building Group (BMI) company was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for the first time.

Introduction of the ABSOLUT XPert

Introduction of the passive house certified chimney system ABSOLUT XPert.

KINGFIRE

The first KINGFIRE furnace system was introduced and the isostatic chimney was W3G certified. In addition, the stainless steel chimney production company Roka from Teplice in the Czech Republic was acquired and a joint venture was entered into with Earthcore Industries from the USA.

Introduction of stainless steel chimneys

Schiedel has introduced the first stainless steel chimneys. In addition, the company Bemal in Belgium was acquired.

Introduction of AERA Comfort

Introduction of the comfort ventilation system AERA Comfort. In addition, the company Ritevent Group in Great Britain was acquired.

The first isostatically, monolithic fittings

Schiedel produces the first isostatically pressed monolithic fittings.

Acquisition of Isokern and Irish Stoneware

Isokern in Denmark and Sweden and the Irish Stoneware company in Ireland were acquired and integrated into Schiedel.

Introduction of AERA LVS

Due to the shaft competence in chimneys: introduction of the air distribution system for the living space AERA LVS. In addition, BTG Schornsteinsysteme was acquired in Germany.

ABSOLUT & KERASTAR

The revolutionary chimney system ABSOLUT with thermal separator and the isostatic stainless steel chimney system KERASTAR were introduced. In addition, the acquisition of Vibralit in Italy and Ulster Fireclays in Great Britain / Northern Ireland took place.

Purchase of Heinrich Hess KG

Purchase of the concrete plant Heinrich Hess KG from Germany.

Introduction of the isostatic smoke vent

The first isostatic smoke vent was introduced.

Introduction of the SIH PARAT

The SIH PARAT was introduced. Here PARAT stands for factory-finished and storey-high chimney systems.

Start of international expansion

Start of international expansion into Eastern Europe through organic growth and acquisition of small local suppliers. At the same time, Schiedel was acquired by Braas / Redland (now Braas Monier Building Group).

Introduction of the SIH

The insulated chimney with rear ventilation SIH was introduced.

First insulated chimney

The first insulated chimney system was introduced. Also Ontop GmbH was founded in Middelburg, the Netherlands.

New location in Nussbach

A new Schiedel site was established in Nussbach, Austria, to be closer to customers.

The birth of Schiedel

The company name "Erbacher Bauwaren" was changed to the present and well-known name "Schiedel". In addition, the production range was reduced exclusively to double-walled chimneys.

The founder

Friedrich Schiedel was born in 1913 in Bad Wurzach in modest circumstances. After graduating from high school in 1931, he began studying civil and road engineering at a technical college. After the end of the war, he founded the Erbacher Bauwaren company in Erbach near Ulm in 1946. This was done, as he always liked to report, "literally with two borrowed shovels and a borrowed wheelbarrow".

The founder

Friedrich Schiedel (*13 September 1913 - † March 28, 2001, in Grünburg) was born in 1913 in Bad Wurzach (then: Baierz) in modest circumstances. After graduating from high school in 1931, he began technical school studies in civil engineering and road construction. After the end of the war, he founded the Erbacher Bauwaren company in Erbach near Ulm in 1946. This was done, as he always liked to report, "literally with two borrowed shovels and a borrowed wheelbarrow." In the years that followed, the small business grew into an economically strong and successful group of companies with a total of 17 plants. From 1951, the Erbach-based company produced building products under the name "Schiedel".

the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria (1978) and the Federal Cross of Merit I Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1983), as well as the Grand Silver Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria (1989), the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg (1992) and the Bavarian Order of Merit (1996). He also received honorary citizenship of the towns of Hauerz/Bad Wurzach (1971), Puchschlagen/Schwabhausen (1971) and Markt Schöllnach im Bayerischen Wald (1977). In 1971, Friedrich Schiedel was also made an honorary senator of the Technical University (TU) of Munich, with which his company collaborated intensively.

Friedrich Schiedel was an early advocate of the transfer of scientific research results and technological innovations into commercial practice. But it was not only the innovative strength and the upswing of his company or the progress in production technologies that were important to him. As a socially responsible and far-sighted entrepreneur, he also always paid attention to adequate social benefits for his employees and their families, which is still the philosophy of the company today. Due to his comprehensive commitment as an entrepreneur, he received numerous honors: For his socially committed and entrepreneurial work, he was honored with numerous awards, including the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Austria (1975),

The company

In 1946, Friedrich Schiedel founded the Erbacher Bauwaren company in Erbach near Ulm. As early as 1947, he specialized his concrete plant in Erbach into a chimney factory, whose manufacturing range was reduced exclusively to the production of double-walled chimneys in 1951. From then on, the company produced under the name "Schiedel" with 17 employees on its own land. In 1952 the production of chimneys was started in Munich. In the years from 1961 to 1966, Senator e. h. Friedrich Schiedel established several production and sales facilities in the metropolitan areas of Germany and in 1966 also in Nußbach in Austria. In 1971, a central administration building was erected in Munich. In the years from 1971 to 1990, he continued to expand the business and was the sole shareholder of Friedrich Schiedel Holding GmbH in Austria. In 1990 he transferred the Schiedel group of companies in Germany and those in Austria to Braas GmbH in 1991. Today Schiedel is represented in over 25 countries and operates 21 ceramic and steel plants. Based on the ingenious idea of the founder Friedrich Schiedel in 1946 - to produce chimneys not only from bricks but from lightweight concrete blocks - Schiedel created many other industry-revolutionary developments. Our entrepreneurial milestones include the circular chimney in 1966, the insulating chimney in 1985, the universal ABSOLUT chimney in 1999, the ABSOLUT Thermo air draft for room-air-independent operation of individual fireplaces, and the combination of our innovative shaft-integrated and room-air-independent stove insert KINGFIRE.

Schiedel in the UK and Ireland

In the UK we have been manufacturing and exporting the Rite Vent brand of Steel products from our Washington plant for more than 50 years and have built a reputation for high quality, installer friendly products, which is second to none.

Today Schiedel products are exported across the globe.

The range of Schiedel Chimney products such as ICID, ICS, Prima Plus, Prima Smooth, TecnoFlex Plus were all conceived, developed and designed in Washington and are still made in Washington as they always have been. We also distribute the Isokern Pumice range from our office on the South Coast at Poole and the Ceramic range from Coalisland, Northern Ireland as well as Poole.

Innovative for over 75 years

What our company founder and namesake Friedrich Schiedel built up in 1946 with two borrowed shovels and a borrowed wheelbarrow has been crowned with success. Far-sighted in his thinking, clear in his conception, energetic in his actions, this is how Friedrich Schiedel's concept can be described and history shows that his vision worked out. His first factory for prefabricated chimneys was built in Erbach near Ulm. In 1967, Friedrich Schiedel then opened the "Schiedel Kaminwerke" in Austria. His entrepreneurial spirit, know-how, perseverance and a competent team of employees paved the way for success. The company grew, expanded its locations, its sales structures and its business areas. As a result, Schiedel is now the undisputed number 1 in Europe for highly energy-efficient chimney systems, innovative stove solutions and integrated ventilation solutions.
